No need for you to resent "warmongers" - but yeah, it was hyperbolic.
Arafat shared the 1994 Peace Prize with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, for negotiating the Oslo Accords that subsequent Israeli governments have abrogated, blaming Arafat for the actions of extremists over whom he has never had control.
Gorbachev received his for leading the dismantling of the totalitarian "hellhole". What he and Reagan did for nuclear disarmament may have deserved nomination, but their work wasn't mentioned in either the presentation speech you linked to or in Gorby's acceptance.
As to Carter... "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to Jimmy Carter, for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." ... In the last paragraph of the reasons it gave for awarding this year's Peace Prize to Jimmy Carter, the Norwegian Nobel Committee mentioned "a situation marked by threats of the use of power", and emphasised that "conflicts must as far as possible be resolved through negotiation and international co-operation based on international law, respect for human rights, and economic development." These are principles which Carter has stood for, ever more firmly. These are the principles which the Norwegian Nobel Committee hopes that the international community will take as its guidelines in the difficult conflicts the world is facing today and will face in the years to come. --Address by Gunnar Berge, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Oslo, December 10, 2002
"...[N]egotiation and international co-operation based on international law, respect for human rights, and economic development." Leftist politics? Too bad values like that aren't universal - maybe you can enlighten me as to which of them the Right disagrees with - and more importantly, why?
