Europe has been heading this way since WW II -- or at least the mid 50s. I think it's very optimistic to cast the final decline as far out as another 50 years. With accelerations in technical progress and the current potentials for economic growth/downfall, I would put the chasm closer to 20 years out.
In conclusion, the report said, the essential element in the EU's response to its prospect of decline is action involving a political project that would create a sense of involvement and responsibility in each of its citizens.
This would have to be across the board -- and it is likely that other nations, and national groups, will attempt this people-bolstering tactic as well. Overall (globally speaking) a good thing, but would twist the EU’s best tries into a mere feeble attempt.
I think the solution for EU is purely political. What is needed is a revolution at the government level, one that includes reform at all levels, from the ministers to the people. It’ll be a hot time for Europe, but one that would end with a stronger EU, and a proud, internationally-productive people.
