Did they know before launch that the Viking lander's life detection experiment could have this inconclusive result? Were they surprised with the soil's activity that could mimic life? If they knew this could happen, it seems like it was a waste of time to send such an experiment. I suspect that they were surprised by the soil activity. After all they didn't know much about the soil composition till they landed.
