re: Bush Administration selective editing of EPA report

I don't think the verdicts in yet on global warming. The EPA and Bush are diametrically opposed to one another. I see them both taking the extreme viewpoint on this. Bush's rewriting of the EPA report is small potatoes to me. what i am more concerned about is this:

The conservation voter group Tuesday gave the Bush Administration a failing grade in its environmental record, saying previous administrations are primarily responsible for the progress citied in the new EPA report.

One area where the group says George W. Bush's administration has failed is support of renewal of a tax on polluters to pay for superfund cleanups. Dan Lewis says here in Washington, citizens will have to pay the tab for clean up that should have been covered by the polluters themselves.

"Washington has 14 toxic waste sites in ten different counties, and this cleanup is definitely going to be affected by lack of funds," he says. "During the Clinton administration, 80 sites a year were cleaned up, but under the Bush administration that number has fallen to 42."

Lewis says the Bush administration is alone among previous administrations in failing to support renewal of the polluters tax.

He says nationwide, failure to reenact the polluter tax will result in taxpayers footing the bill at a cost of $1.1 billion a year by 2004.

The debate about global warming is one that won't be conclusively answered in the near future and in the mean time gets in the way of the really important debate about cleaning up pollution sites, and forcing negligant companies to come up with the cash to do it.
