doctrinaire Marxism tends to appeal to those same two demographics, for pretty much the same reasons. The young feel they are the world's only idealists and the only ones who really care about the poor. The old cannot imagine they have mismanaged their lives and must fabricate a conspiracy that oppresses them.
Once you get past their terminology, it's hard to tell the two apart without a program.
