What seems so hard to get across to people is that the issue, in my opinion, is not the ALA's positions on the Patriot Act, or whether or not they may even be right. The issue is that the ALA can marshall such an extended set of policies in opposition to potential government control of libraries in America, while at the same time almost ignoring the issue of existing and rampant totalitarian control of libraries in nations like Cuba, and even welcoming and celebrating official representatives of such nations. Good Lord, the ALA has to wait until next year to decide if there may be oppression in Cuba. I dare say the formal ALA opposition to the Patriot Act was firmed up before the ink was even dry on it.
