First, obviously I knew the subject was getting news coverage. I did link to a news story after all.
Second, I didn't say the Left supported the oppression of Hong Kong.
What I want to see is some support for their struggle, just like I want to see some visible support for the struggle in Iran. Or Cuba, for God's sake. Anybody remember the word "struggle?" Used to be every third word in anything a Leftist wrote. It meant the efforts of the people to overcome oppression, although when a Leftist used the word it only counted if the strugglers were Marxist.
I submit that the organized anti-war movement was largely a political one, with the objective of wrecking the Bush administration and, for many of the Marxist organizers, the objective of bringing down capitalism, the West, and the usual Marxist targets.
If I am wrong, the same peace-loving and freedom-loving leftist groups will march for the Iranians and people of Hong Kong, or at the very least put statements of support for them on their web sites, assuming they can find room among the hymns to Castro.
In every protest around the planet against war and for peace in Iraq, there was not one single sign or banner among all the hundreds of thousands, one sign carried by one of the many marchers who truly and honestly cared about peace, calling on Saddam Hussein to do something...anything...to keep peace in Iraq. Not one. That said it all for me.
