I want to see where you’re at. I’m not a conservative Republican nor am I a liberal Democrat even though I partially agree with both I tend to think for myself and refuse to buy into the political rhetoric.
That's a good, rational stance.
Would you classify the founding fathers, the authors of the greatest document ever written as conservative or liberal?
Well asides from wishing independence from Britain, many shared the same basic values as the British, since so many hailed from there. If you look at the founding fathers as a group in today's light they would all be conservatives. From dress, to speech, to moral codes they hold dear, almost all would never be accepted by the tenets of liberalism as it is expressed today. They would actually be perceived as holy rollers whose condemnation of premarital sex, utter horror at abortion, attitudes towards women would make them more conservative than Billy Graham. In fact, there is great efforts by the liberals to demonize, diminish and discredit these "dead, old, white slaveowners" in the eyes of the next generations.
However, in the eyes of their contemporaries they were revolutionaries. They were radicals and they were agitators. They never were really considered liberals by their contemporaries except perhaps in their handling of religion and allowance for multiple faiths and no official state religion.
As far as I can tell the US constitution is more liberal than conservative, I’m not addressing a political party here only a way of thinking. There is a huge difference between being a liberal free thinker and a liberal slave to the Democratic Party.
If not for liberal thinking, people like you wouldn’t be enjoying the freedoms you have. Could you imagine if the conservative-thinking puritans would have written the constitution? No freedom of speech and no freedom of religion.
The constitution is a pretty well balanced document. It is liberal in its granting of certain freedoms which were regulated under British rule, but on the whole the document enacts very strict and formal bodies and jurisprudence over human affairs. The word liberal is stretched to describe the contents of the constitution.
Liberal or conservative thinking is fine until it they are taken towards their destructive extremes. Excessive freedom manifests in anarchy and perversion. Excessive conservatism manifests in narrowness and repression. My usage of the phrase "Liberal-man" was meant to denote those who identify themselves as the standard bearers for modern day liberalism as a political tool - and specifically those in media or politics whose power and wealth is increased by the attacking of the politically conservative.
When religion and moral superiority takes over a political movement, nothing but oppressive bad crap is the result. The founding fathers knew this.
Again, the balance thing must be a required and recognized policy. Religion and morals are a necessity to stay wholesale murder and anarchy as well as for the protection of personal property. All our laws are based in certain moral beliefs of right and wrong. Absolute permissiveness and liberalism taken to its extreme leads to chaos and discord. Even the human race could fade out and perish if they embraced the love of homosexuality the Greeks had or as was expressed during the renaissance period. I am completely religionless, yet I hold certain strong moral viewpoints and understandings. Repression does not begin with conservatism inasmuch as repression is the act of individuals stifling others.
It has been said that genius knows the answer before the question.
Well, that requires a call to the psychic hotline first.
Later Buddy. :-)
