re: Convention on naming newly discovered planets?
List of all planets
I remember on star trek planets were often named numerically in order of increasing distance from the host star, e.g. Chronos 1, Chronos 2, Chronos 3. Apparently professional astronomers are following a different trend, e.g. Upsilon Andromedae b, Upsilon Andromedae c, Upsilon Andromedae d.
I wonder what happened to planet 'a' ? If they discover more planets in between, will they have to rename them? What would be the name for Earth? Sol 'd' ?
