Flame » in reply to Rmoney would never have run for president had he thought he would have to release his taxes, according to several current and former Bain executives

There's been other speculation, too.

And it makes sense. Romney has made most of his bucks over the last few years off his investments; by his own admission, he is officially unemployed. But like everyone else with stock, he took a bath during the Bush recession and the resulting stock market death spiral..

By careful use of the tax law, like deferring or spreading out gains and losses, he may have been able to shuffle those losses around where they could do him the most good, and written off some of those hits as tax writeoffs. It's all perfectly legal, I had to do something like that myself once to get around an embarassing windfall.

So even though it might be totally legitimate, how would it look if the big tax-cutting candidate who wants to rewrite the tax code, the man who wants to put a stop to the liberal tax-and-spend machine, the friend of the middle class and the small businessman, PAID NO TAXES WHATSOEVER one year? Not even Joe the Plumber could swallow that, and Obummer (boo, hiss) would spank his little Romney Bumney for it big time during the upcoming debates.
