The war in Iraq is a strategic issue. Taking the fight to your opponent is rule#1 in the ring. Standing in the corner and waiting attracts them to come to you and puts you on the defensive. And in this arena we have women, children and innocents in our corner.
For national security the Iraq war and occupation is a win-win scenario. It's not just a honeypot but a HUGE source of new information unable to be acquired before and also an INVALUABLE asset when conducting missions in the whole middle east region.
Strategically, the Iraq war is a brilliant foreign policy decision.
No one mentions Pakistan or India but, after intelligence failures failed to realize they had nuclear programs, a whole new proactive approach towards rogue nations who may be acquiring nukes was likely adopted. The debated approaches likely included the highly controversial pre-emptive conquest in the case of smaller nations on the verge of nuclear acquisition. Iraq was surely on the top of the "nations we don't want to have nukes" list.
