re: Arrakis Sand Worms

I posted this article to make a couple of simple points:

- Saddam has a known history of successfully hiding weapons, including, after the Gulf War, a nuclear program that shocked the U.N. when it was uncovered. Obviously, this type of technique is still being used.

- Quite large assemblies can be hidden almost underfoot, and not be found except by luck or information, even some time after the end of the war. To assume that we have discovered everything that has been hidden or buried in a nation the size of Iraq is ridiculous.

- Since the stuff we are looking for was not tied up in a bright red package and hung around the neck of the Saddam statue in the center of Baghdad, your conclusion is that the stuff CANNOT exist. I tend to go by Saddam's past behavior, past proven WMD programs, past determination to develop WMD, past efforts to conceal such programs, add some common sense, and draw the conclusion that it is more likely that we simply have not found everything yet.

The other thesis, that somehow in the past year or so Saddam decided to reform, unilaterally disarm in total secrecy, and give up any notion of ever developing WMD--particularly in the face of nuclear development programs going on in Iran--is inane.

We will see who is right.
