BC forest fires update

While cooler weather and lower winds helped firefighters a little in the last couple of days, we seem to be heading into another period of hot, dry, windy weather. The number of fires burning in BC has dropped from a high of about 850 a few days ago to 776 today.

Last Friday night, 30,000 people were evacuated from Kelowna, a beautiful lakeside resort/retirement community of 100,000 in the BC southern interior. A wall of flame 400 feet high moving at over 100 yards per minute swept through residential areas of the city, destroying almost 250 homes, many of them newly built and in the $500,000 - $1,000,000 range. Homes were totally consumed, some burning completely in a single minute. All that is left are chimneys and foundations.

Miraculously, nobody has been killed or even seriously injured in the fires.
