Not surprising. Society is and always has been dynamic, though the rate of change increases with time.
If you look back at the behavior of people even as recently as 50 years ago it's evident that their perceptions of themselves and the world are often quite different from our own. Go back centuries, and it sometimes feels like you're looking at a different species.
For the youth of today to reject much in the world of their parents is quite natural, I think, and certainly in keeping with the established pattern. Change is the only constant, as the saying goes. (Must be a Sith saying. Absolutely.)
