The rate of change is not constant, it also changes. In physics, the rate of change of the rate of change of the rate of change of displacement (mathematically, the third derivative) is called the "jerk".
There is one thing that never changes, though. Each generation always believes its perception of the world and themselves is the right one. Both our parents AND our children obviously have it all wrong.
