It would be interesting to see the military budget per deployed persons through time.
Came across this table while Googling, showing that the country with the largest armed force per capita is... TADA... Eritrea! at 44.7 per 1000 population. The US is 57th, with 4.87 per 1000; Canada is only 1.85 per 1000. (lots of other interesting stuff on the site, too - such as the ranking of the most trigger-happy countries, longest lived, most educated, etc)
