I have read Lovelock, but favor Kastings work on detecting biogenic gases on extra solar planets. O3 on Mars could be a left over from a time before it lost most of its oxygen to space. There are some incredibly large impact basins on Mars and anyone of these could have flash evaporated oceans and eventaully lost O2 to space.
