At times like this I wonder what the face of Islam would look like if the Mongols hadn't sacked Baghdad twice (1256 and 1401), destroying the center of Muslim civilization.
The Mongol invasions were the Muslim world's equivalent of the invasions that precipitated the fall of Rome. It took a while for Europe to recover from that too.
