What about personal reference?
How about simple curiosity?
What about research for a future published work?
It is, after all, a free country -- until you enter the dictatorship known as the military, that is (not that I knock my time in at all).
Anyway, I've been known to pace the dimensions of our own downtown buildings, and that while working as lowly security guard up through security detail commander. I had done the same in military motor pools, barracks, and command posts (my reasons, btw, were the three I listed above, and always strictly for benign, personal use).
Another reason might even be an "I told you so" trophy of his tour at Guantanamo. Who knows?
None of the whys, though, really matter in this case. The fact remains that the man was caught with classified information to which he was not privileged, and likely not even cleared, to hold (the description ["diagrams"] implies exacting plans, such as freehand etchings, design prints, or even detailed blueprints, possibly for the entirety of Gitmo). He was busted. The investigation is ongoing, and there will, in all likelihood, be a hearing to determine the depth of his culpability in a “possible†crime, which may, or may not, build into a trial by court marshal.
