Here's the precise point: we have heard over and over again that WTC made the invasion of Iraq necessary. Unless those making such statements are blithering idiots, then it implies a link. Not that WTC made us so angry that we needed a foe to kick, and we hated Saddam the most (though that's probably why so many were willing to accept such nonsense). Instead that invading Iraq was a rational response to the WTC attack. No link, then no rationality.
US citizens are smart enough to pick up an implication like that.
