There are too damn many people in this world who think other people need to not only be prevented from committing evil acts, but need to be "forced" into proper behaviors. The former is the province of criminal law. The latter is pretty much any social engineering project or crusade you could name.
Believe me, this kind of thing rises above Left and Right. The general rule of thumb (oversimplified, to be sure) has always been the Left demands control of your economic life, and the Right demands control of your behavior. They get goofy about it, too. Leftists demand control of every aspect of how you earn a living, including the right to take what you earn, but hey, it's just fine if you date a sheep. Rightists give you tax cuts, but will haul you to jail for smoking a joint.
The reason I worry more about the Left is that right now they throw a lot more weight around. I am far more likely to have my taxes raised and be forced into some new socialist scheme than I am likely to be arrested for drinking on a Sunday, or sodomy.
