Problem: Text-2-Binary conversion in Visual Basic

I convert a text file to binary, then convert the binary file back to text. The text file that I started with is identical to the text file I end up with, so the input & output seems to work fine. However the intermediate binary file is a bit larger than the text files.

I thought binary files were supposed to be smaller, and faster. Is this a problem? Or have i been misled?
