I've converted all FP numbers to integers and cleared the contents of the binary file first before writing to it:

Private Sub Command1_Click()
Open "c:\tst.txt" For Output As #1: Close #1
Open "c:\tst.txt" For Binary As #1
Put #1, , "b"
Close #1
End Sub

This has reduced even small file sizes by 45%. I'm modifying my larger program now to do the same thing. Hopefully the effect will be even more dramatic.
