In the recent batch of photos I saw one from southern Australia with a red glow on the horizon not entirely convincing, but who knows. And Aurorae are reported from time to time in Tasmania - 500 km south of here, and more rural.
Trouble is I'm at 37.5 degrees from the equator, and the geomagnetic pole isn't ideally placed to improve this much.
I've been out of a night recently when the geomagnetic index was high and the clouds were missing, but with many trees and a city to my south I'm unlikely to see anything.
Back in the late 80's I lived in Scotland and drove home every night over a range of hills with no street lighting. Saw some beautiful aurorae then in the northern sky.
All monochromatic, but everything from a general twinkling of the sky to arcs, shimmering curtains, rays, hoops, etc - all magnificently dynamic. Photos just don't convey a fraction of the beauty.
