One of my profs at university was originally from Hungary. He was (and still is, I imagine) an intelligent, kind, soft-spoken liberal. But he bristled strongly at nearly any mention of the Soviet Union and communism. Needless to say, he was usually on the outs with the other profs (none of whom, to the best of my knowledge, had any first-hand contact with communism aside from a card they kept in their wallet). He could make the hair on your neck stand up with stories about the horrible sound a Soviet tank made as it tore up pavement. I heard him ask on more than one occassion--rhetorically, of course: "Why does there have to be a Soviet Union?"
I think it would have been a very difficult task indeed to convince him communism was no threat, to him either as a youth in Hungary or an adult in North America.
