re: Launch escape vs Pad escape
All the manned "capsule" designs I've worked on used the abort system for pad escape, giving enough altitude for the landing chutes or other landing systems to come into play. In our Alternate Access concept, fuel normally used in small thrusters for orbital maneuvering and reentry was blown by a gas charge through big pipes to high-thrust ablative motors for escape and abort.
