Logic, sophistry, and rhetoric were pretty well defined by the Ancient Greeks. Tom and most right wing Republicans make a mockery of logic, because they just exclude all the moderate information that really determines what's going to happen. It's like me saying, would Tom prefer to be torn limb from limb or to have worked in the Republican Guard for Saddam. If he answers the second one then he's a Saddam butt kisser. If he picks the first one he wants to kill himself and is a suicide risk. If he's not sure then he's a suspected terrorist with suicidal tendencies.
Excluding the middle is just a tired old trick that has been known for thousands of years. Up is downism was invented by Socrates I think, but Bush and Cheney use it quite well. That is they use it to befuddle people, it falls flat on its face when they try to actually make any policy with it.
