When I was a kid, obvious seasonal changes had been seen on Mars through telescopes for many years, and most of us took it for granted that some kind of vegetation was involved, although maybe only lichens or something primitive.
Heck, I remember an old science book for kids that had flat maps of Mars on the inside of the covers...with carefully-labelled canals.
