I feel terrible about the current state of relations between the US and Canada, but I'm also sure that the pendulum will continue to swing and relations will warm again.

The Liberals have always been deathly afraid of looking "too cosy with the US," so every now and then they stick a finger in the eye of the best friend Canada will ever have. In the grand scheme of things, it's both inexplicable and probably not terribly important, but in the tiny, inbred world of Canadian politics it makes the Liberals feel independant...kinda like the way dismissing the concerns of a parent can make a teen feel "all grown up."

The US is so much a part of Canadian life, yet to a great many Canadians that influence is like water is to a fish...vital, ever-present (one hopes), but barely recognized and completely taken for granted.
