Off Topic » in reply to Sloppy fire discipline is now a matter of doctrine.

The cousin of the "mad minute". And a deep philosophical question.

That was "reconnaissance by fire", whereby the object wasn't to supress but to attract return fire.

There is no way I'd want to be around any American unit which had an M-80 firecracker go off nearby. Everyone within seeing distance is going to get shot at. Maybe not hit, but shot at.

So, now, if the most important thing is coming home alive, that makes sense. Make like a New York City Fire Department boat during the arrival of some dignitary.

However, if the MISSION is winning hearts and minds, one must be more cautious and accept more casualties. In that case any particular individual's welfare is subservient to the "mission".

However, all parents and their Congressmen would complain if restraint led to a relative or constituent being killed. Therefore "hearts and minds" will never be a feature of US warfare, no matter what is said. It will always be a slaughter, called "collateral damage", one of the world's most deceiving terms as applied to Americans.

Additionally, once one employees weapons larger than a mortar one has given up on "hearts and minds" anyway. You are killing anything you can. Rightly or wrongly, I'm not going to say. I am saying that you are killing innocent people unless you can find a war like I or II, or maybe even Korea. But those were the last.
