Crossing interstellar distances is seen as an insurmountable challenge, not just because of the energy and speed needed, but also because of the danger of colliding with debris along the way. At 10% cee or higher collisions of interstellar dust will begin to shower the interior of a starship with deadly gamma rays. But go faster we must, if interstellar travel is ever to become reality.
One solution is to clear a path ahead of the starship, using lasers and magnetic fields to first ionize particles and then deflect then out of the way. However this would waste an enormous amount of energy, lost as momentum to the deflected particles.
Another solution is to use wormholes: to open a debris-free tunnel through spacetime connecting two locations, and then travel through it to the other side. Still another idea is to define the quantum states of every particle in the starship, and teleport the state data to the destination where a quantum entangled replica is made.
Most of this is still in the science fiction phase, so I would like to propose another idea: I call it the Relativistic Interstellar Torpedo Engine (RITE). The RITE is needle-shaped, long and as thin as possible. It is a classic starship, but tiny in size and only a few grams mass. The RITE is accelerated to near lightspeed by classic machinery in Solar orbit, e.g. magnetic launcher, laser sail. But it has key differences ...
- Two wormholes on front and back, generated by machinery between them, and entangled or connected to each other in topological spacetime.
- One wormhole as cargo, connected in topological spacetime to another wormhole in the Sol System.
As the RITE travels through space at 99.999 % cee, any debris it encounters simply disappears into the wormhole generated at the front, and reappears at the aft-generated wormhole. The RITE continues through space to it's destination unscathed.
Upon arrival at the destination star system the wormhole in the cargo hold is activated, and another starship appears aft of the RITE, but this ship emerges with zero velocity relative to the destination star. The RITE continues on at relativistic speed some distance, then simply deactivates its wormhole shields and self-destructs.
The new starship now orbits the star, carrying another wormhole which can be used to bootstrap a larger colonization of the system.
(I'm really into this 'wormhole' idea)
