I've fallen hook, line and sinker for a few myself. A while back, someone put together a webpage that looked like CNN or Yahoo News or some such organization, and had a fake story about how Bill Gates and some of his rich pals were going to foot a huge bill for some sort of space endeavor (mission to Mars, was it?).
Dang thing looked real. I'm surprised my head didn't explode.
For me in similar circumstances now, the key is to resist the urge to make a quick, outraged or overjoyed post, and try to do at least a little follow-up. I'm rarely deep enough in-the-loop to be the first one to post about something here, so who cares if I'm the third or the seventh or the 20th to join a thread? Besides, if I hold back for a little bit, I get to benefit from the research done by other posters before I jump in :-)
