Question on Gamma Rays

I read a sci fi book a couple years ago that said Gamma rays from a super nova, unlike light, do not go in all directions at once but instead shoot out like a beam. Thus it would be pretty darn bad luck if that beam happened to be headed in our direction. Comments?
