MY REPLY: That's easy - they don't look metalic. They look like broken and wind polished rocks.

Of course, I wonder how Hoagland will explain himself as Spirit sends us close-ups and composition analysis of these rocks. Jim, only an idiot would think those rocks are pieces of machinery. But then, that explains everything.
