re: Yellowcake in Rotterdam Harbor IS From Iraq
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"I wouldn't hype it too much," said spokeswoman Melissa Fleming. "It was a small amount and it wasn't being peddled as a sample."
Inspections and other work by the U.N. have always been a bit hampered by the fact that almost everyone at the U.N. would rather jam red-hot icepicks into their own eyeballs than confirm anything that would justify what America did in Iraq. See also: Hans Blix. But that's another story.
More work is being done to see if it can be tracked back more specifically. Apparently it's possible to track it back to a certain mine.
Almost certainly this stuff is from pre-Gulf War nuclear projects. But wouldn't it be a hoot if it was tracked back to a mine in Africa?
And of course, the immortal false meme:
President Bush came under heavy criticism last year when he asserted in his State of the Union address that Iraq was shopping in Africa for uranium yellowcake — intelligence that turned out to be based on forged documents.
At the time, British intelligence patiently explained that their information on uranium from Africa--not just Niger, Africa--was based on sources other than the forged documents. To the best of my knowledge, they still stand by it. Naturally, these facts have not made a dent in the story.
