was not so much - How did we go wrong and who did it?*, but more - Why did we go wrong and how do we stop this kind of cock-up from happening again?
That to me, is hardly pointless.
Yes, you will still in the future need interpretation. But maybe if you learn the lessons of this failure now, you may have better info to go on in the future.
*in fact, if you listened to Bush yesterday he never once said "we were wrong", or even "oops" :-)
