There are not many minerals that are both hard and white. If you know of another mineral that is white and would not be scratched by the Sojourner rover wheels, then I would be interested in hearing of it.
Since the Pathfinder scientists came to the conclusion that it is a type of indurated carbonate or sulfate because of these physical properties, I'm sure they would be interested as well.
