14/15

I'm sorry I never listened to the Violent Femmes and three of those 14 were just lucky guesses combined with process of elimination. Don't ask me to do the same thing for the 90's - though I might do a fair job at the 70s too. I think it helps your score if you lived in an area with long commute times during the 80s ;-)

They could have made that quiz a whole lot tougher if they included the latter eighties music that nobody who listened in the early eighties was really paying attention too (I certainly wasn't). By the time the Beastie Boys, Sinead O'Conner and Enya hit the air waves - "eighties" music was really pretty much already dead. Famous 80's music exists really in a small window of time from around 1982-1986. I remember watching the first few days of the spanking new MTV and thinking how stupid it was to combine music and video - and how seeing how the musicians looked would ruin listening to their songs. (some of those early videos were very very dumb) If I like a song or a group, I have always tried to do myself the favor of not seeing any videos, which will surely cause me to stop enjoying them.

I can understand Bowser's sentiment. If you compare a Carpenter's song with something by Depeche Mode or The Fixx you'll see that one is about melodious music and harmony and the other is about synthesizers and rythyms. 80's music discovered the synthesizer and the groups of this era used synthesizer rythyms to make up for a lack of real musical talent. Today the "music" doesn't even have the benefit of a good rythym.

The dearth of good music is simply all pervasive. Can you believe it I heard a bad remake of a Talk Talk song on the radio about a week ago. Where's the creativity folks? Recycling the 80's is pathetic. Who here doesn't cringe when you hear some 80s theme mixed in with some gangsta hood song? Has anybody here even listened to an eminem song? Is that the "music" you hear inadvertantly, like a 'noise' version of second hand smoke from slammed imports with subwoofers bigger than their tires? And how can you not but feel sorry for the teens of today whose role models are all a bunch of no-talents? Being a teenager is all about being a sheep that gets programmed by your external cues. When your external cues are completely retarded - what's a poor teen with undeveloped discernment to do? You got it - hang some baggy painters pants down around your knees and let your underwear show. Put on a baseball cap backwards and throw on some sneakers.

The 80s were about synthesizers and the 21st century music is about interlaced profanities and emulating ghetto crack dealers who can't read the pant size label in their ill fitting Salvation Army pants.
