The basic design of the nuclear reactor, radiation shield and thermal radiator geometry shown for JIMO is quite old (mid 1960s) and pre-dates "Star Wars". If anything, one of George Lucas' minions nabbed the basic shape for the Star Destroyer from an old NASA artist's conception.
I liked the original episode of Star Wars (one of my favorite movies). The "Return of Jedi" was fun until they brought in the cute teddy bears and then it became nauseating ("Attack of the Clones" was unwatchable). The "engineering" of the spacecraft in Star Wars is idiotic. I wouldn't spend too much time analysing it. A big quarrel I have with popular science fiction (actually space fantasy) is the requirement that I need to turn my brain off in order to enjoy it. How I long for another movie like Kubrick's "2001". That was a masterpiece.
