I don't know...do cancer researchers at the Salk Institute count? And what about German physicists?
Maybe in some remote corners of academia there are folks with Davin's priorities - but almost every research student I have known was looking for a cushy 150k research job for the corporate sector a year after they got their degree and were scanning the classifieds while preparing their resumes. Perhaps I just have known the wrong people? How much does Science pay for peer reviewed articles? Oh, that's right they make you pay for them. What pays is to try and become part of a major corporate entity and let their clout do your door opening for you.
I guess I attract soulless, evil, republican capitalists - somewhat like pig-pen attracts dirt.
Likewise, the bleeding hearts must also bleed together somewhere as well...that sounds so messy though.
