RTGs are a good thing but ...
Like Larry, I'm a big fan of RTGs. However RTGs are heavy and expensive. If MER was required to carry RTGs, it would have to be redesigned from a clean piece of paper (almost none of MER's successful flight heritage could be reused). The revised MER would eventually morph into MSL with its silly "Sky Crane" alias "the bungee cord of death".
