It's a common affliction to combat soldiers under heavy stress regardless of the war. A very famous photo from the Vietnam War shows a Marine with the affliction. Here's a link about the story.

War ages someone very quickly. According to many reports, it wasn't uncommon to hear 19 year olds in Vietnam saying, "I'm getting too old for this shit."
