The actual Amnesty International press release can be found here, in case anyone want the information unfiltered through the kidneys of a French newspaper and a leftist translator. The full report can be found in a link at the bottom of the press release.
People like Lindy will push the 10,000 figure, giving the deliberate impression that 10,000 people have been killed by coalition forces.
In the report, the civilians killed by coalition action are referred to by the term "scores." Over and over again. I could find no actual tally, but interested people may wish to go to Iraq Body Count page and tally up the casualties due to direct coalition action. "Scores" are multiples of twenty. Does anyone doubt that if the total was more than 200, that the number would have been "hundreds?"
Merging the casualties caused by coalition forces, individual murders, insurgents and terrorists into a single count is, to put it mildly, deceptive. Also, I don't see anyone subtracting Saddam's average annual body count--never mind what he and his sons would have added to the tally over the next decades--from this number either. This latter fact seems to escape everyone's notice lately.
That there is a lot of crap going down in Iraq is not open to argument. It's only been a year since the fall of a murderous dictatorship. Most of the recommendations at the end of the AI report are good ones, and many of them, like replacing military with police forces, are being done as fast as possible.
And there is something else that should be remembered: At least now Iraq is run by people who will actually pay attention to Amnesty International.
