Space/Science » in reply to Just discovered: The Official True Color of Mars

re: Robert Robert Robert...

Glad you found the evidence, the smoking gun as it were, that shows what many of us have suspected was going on for years.

All the "true color" images coming out of NASA/JPL have looked like they were Photoshopped/colorized by amateurs, and they have obviously utilized a single "colorization" model -- one that has little or nothing to do with the elaborate filters and all that. Most everything they put out these days using the filters is labeled "false color" -- primarily, I'm convinced, because those damned bluberries are blue in nearly all RGB versions anyone can come up with, and NASA has decided they are NOT blue so stop saying they are!

The color images you and others have created and shown us may not be absolutely accurate -- we really won't know until we get some human eyes on the Martian surface to check it out -- but they are obviously not simply "colorized" to fit a predetermined official MarsColor. One instinctively responds to your images as being MORE accurate representations of the Martian surface because they utilize the varied wavelengths the eye can see, varied hues and intensities, and the skies are usually white or bluish, not that awful mud color of the "true color" NASA images -- that no one believes is correct in any case because you only get that sky color when you use the official "true color" wavelength.

At least NASA has given up on the hyper orange/red Mars of yore. Let us be grateful. Small favors and all that.

Also what you and others have shown is that though it takes some skill and more talent to get things just about right, it is not impossible. Quick and dirty color composites are cropping up everywhere. High-end work like yours is rarer, but it is being done. Except, apparently, at NASA.

Why, we wonder, shaking our heads, is that?

Thanks for showing what is going on, and for your constant hammering away at getting it right!

Cheers, BRFelix
