Narcissism - it's understandable, if not pretty.

"Individuals with this Cluster B Personality Disorder have an excessive sense of how important they are. They demand and expect to be admired and praised by others and are limited in their capacity to appreciate others' perspectives."

They can understand that others have different views than they, but know in their heart of hearts that anyone who thinks differently than they is wrong.

A by-product of that is the inability to admit they are ever wrong. Can't do it, because their whole sense of self-esteem is built upon being right, superior, infallible.

"(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements) "

That self-importance collapses if ever they could admit a mistake. (Interesting aside - when one is talking about a, for instance, failed relationship, they often will say, "I know I did plenty wrong, but - - - ". Ask them to name three things. They won't be able to.)

"(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others."

They regard other people as objects to be manipulated. That enables them to rationalize, for instance, the killing of thousands of innocents because "I hate dictators!", as if those innocents don't matter.

Allows them to justify war instead of Universal Health Coverage, as an other example. Those people without health coverage really don't matter, they can handle it, and if God loved them they'd have coverage (Calvin).

So, there are a lot of narcissists around. Clinton was/is one, but his politics were OK because he sought gratification through a different means than money. He sought adoration of many.

And, there may be a few lurking around this board.

They can't admit mistakes, they can't understand how other people think, they don't regard others as really human. The proof of that is their treatment of them, wars, lack of social services in a wealthy country, etc. And have you seen anyone completely cornered, and still unable to admit they were wrong around here?
