Weathered basalt -or altered basalt?
I liked your idea about weathered basalt. That reminded me about alteration processes that occur in the ground such as kaolinization and sericitization. From what I recall, these processes can be widespread and often give a "bleached" appearance. I'll have to freshen up on the details.
