Thanks, TB. Actually, it's not a God or an apprentice. There are rings around the planet and my idea, if I develop this further (and I'd like to) is that aliens long ago left something in those rings that communicates to their Portent Tellers to warn them of things to come. The Portent Tellers receive a special hormone that makes them "open" to the communications and they are specially trained almost from birth. That all came out in further little short stories.
Evidently, I have a lot of work to do on that 3rd one. It's about a father whose son died and he has an accident where he is floating into the sun and because of his grief, welcomes oblivion. Then when he is saved, he is disappointed.
