I wonder
If some of the resentment in the world towards america has to do with the fact that we disdain the idea of learning other languages... We are one of the most monolingual in the first world...
Personally when it comes to foreign languages I am only able to read them... speak them like a mentally impaired native and hear and understand them not at all...
Understanding a language and the culture gives you far more understanding than a translator...
