Just simple observation of human nature, in a lot of places besides Iraq. It seems to be a truism that if you get 8 bored, testosterone-ridden teenage boys together, the odds of trouble ensuing go up by a lot more than a factor of 8.*

Add one girl to this mix, or two, and you go logarithmic.

Add in tension, fear, and the pressure of a war zone. Not a good mix.

How old were the perpetrators? I'd bet none of them were over 25, but I don't know.

*I wonder if much of the constant, routine, and often seemingly-useless shitwork that military men for thousands of years have been saddled with during non-combat hours is an attempt to de-fuse this factor?
