You'd have to take that scenario one step further.
IF one accepts the premise that Saddam did have stockpiles of WMD, obviously concealed from the U.N., would leaving him alone have been any guarantee either of keeping this crap out of terrorist hands? Never mind what plans Saddam might have for them, given his proven history of using them. Kind of a difficult choice.
Invade, and take the chance that the WMD will sneak out of the country, or leave Saddam alone and hope he doesn't get ideas about who to give the WMD to, or who to drop them on.
In light of this, maybe our biggest mistake was dinking around at the United Nations for so long, and giving Saddam time to sort things out and hide the evidence.
Frankly, knowing Saddam, I would think it would have been much more likely that any weapons would have been carefully hidden somewhere in Iraq, not shipped to Syria, unless Saddam had much more reason to trust Syrian than I think he does.
There's more to this story, and I'm waiting to see what it is. Kay said there were trucks, and so did other intelligence sources. Sure as hell they weren't full of cowpeas imported from Niger.
